Camden leisure centre upgrade expands access

By Hiyastar Newsroom

Talacre Sports Community Centre has completed its redevelopment, giving Camden residents expanded sports, fitness and gymnastics facilities after the final newly developed areas opened to community users.

The project has upgraded the centre’s infrastructure and added space for learning and development in sport and fitness. Camden Council said the completed works mean Talacre can now accommodate more than twice as many students as before.

A launch event was held on Thursday 11 June 2026 to mark the completion of the phased opening and show the new areas to partners and community groups.

New gymnastics space and upgraded facilities

The redevelopment includes a new purpose-built gymnasium with specialist equipment designed for younger gymnasts and residents with special educational needs and disabilities.

That change is central to Talacre’s role in Camden’s sports network. The centre is known locally for gymnastics, fitness sessions and community access, and the additional capacity is intended to support more structured training as well as wider use by residents.

Camden Gymnastics Club members performed at the launch event. The council said some of the gymnasts began training at Talacre from the age of three and had gone on to qualify for the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics British Championships.

The upgrade places Talacre alongside other London leisure projects where councils are trying to modernise ageing facilities while keeping them useful for schools, clubs and local residents. A similar pattern can be seen in the Tower Hamlets leisure centre rebuild, where new sport and community space is being planned as part of a wider redevelopment.

More space for young athletes and learners

The most practical change for many families is capacity. With room for more than twice as many students, the centre is expected to support a larger pipeline of young people taking part in gymnastics and fitness learning.

For clubs, schools and community partners, that can mean more session availability, improved training conditions and a clearer route from early participation to advanced sport.

The council’s announcement also frames Talacre as a hub for learning, not just a leisure venue. That matters in an area where indoor sports space can be under pressure from demand, maintenance costs and competing local priorities.

Inclusive equipment for SEND residents

The new gymnasium includes specialist equipment for residents with SEND, widening the centre’s potential use beyond mainstream training sessions.

Inclusive sport provision often depends on practical details: suitable equipment, trained staff, safe layouts and enough session space. By building those needs into the redevelopment, Talacre is positioned to serve residents who may otherwise face barriers to structured fitness or gymnastics activity.

The council has not published a detailed timetable for individual SEND sessions in the source notice, but the facility design is being presented as part of the centre’s long-term community role.

Council leaders mark the completed works

Camden Council Leader Sagal Abdi-Wali and Cllr Pat Callaghan, Cabinet Member for Community Resilience, attended the launch and gave speeches praising the renovations.

Their remarks focused on the centre’s value for local sport, leisure and wellbeing for both Camden residents and visitors.

The completion follows a phased opening of newly developed areas, meaning the launch marked the end of the visible redevelopment process rather than the start of construction.

Talacre’s role in Camden sport

Talacre Sports Community Centre has a strong local identity because of its gymnastics programme and its links with young athletes who have trained there from early childhood.

The redevelopment strengthens that role by combining upgraded infrastructure with a larger teaching and training footprint. For residents, the main test will be how the extra capacity translates into access: more places, better sessions and facilities that remain available to a broad mix of users.

Camden Council said the completed redevelopment is intended to enhance sport, leisure and wellbeing at Talacre Sports Community Centre.
