Ealing residents can launch interpreting careers with new training

Multilingual residents in Ealing have a new opportunity to transform their language skills into a professional career. Learn Ealing, the adult learning service for Ealing Council, is opening assessments for its community interpreting course this summer. This pathway is designed to bridge the gap between casual volunteering and professional, paid employment in the public sector.

Training for professional standards and paid roles

The community interpreting course focuses on more than just translation. It covers essential professional boundaries, safeguarding, and the specific standards required for working in legal, medical, or local government settings. Councillor Kamaljit Nagpal, cabinet member for decent living incomes, noted that these courses are part of a broader initiative to help residents access well-paid jobs by upskilling or reskilling in high-demand fields.

Many of these adult learning programs are free of charge, depending on eligibility, and offer flexible learning options including both face-to-face and online sessions. The curriculum is built to help learners build the confidence needed to navigate complex real-world scenarios.

Gaining practical experience in Ealing

Participants are encouraged to apply their learning through local projects. Aisha Mirza, a Greenford resident who completed the level 1 course, recently volunteered with a Ukrainian community project. She found that the experience allowed her to apply classroom skills and see the immediate impact of interpreters in practice.

Similarly, Acton resident Reza Melek, who has been a volunteer interpreter for over a decade, joined the course to formalize his expertise. He explained that observing a Ukrainian support project in action helped him understand how much structured community interpreting matters in a professional context.
