Hackney will host a free programme of community events from Saturday 20 June to Sunday 28 June as part of London Climate Action Week 2026, with activities spread across parks, gardens, community centres and repair spaces in the borough.
When: 20-28 June 2026
Where: Various locations across Hackney, London
Cost: Free, with some events asking people to sign up, book or reserve a place
Who it is for: Local residents, families, volunteers and anyone interested in repair, nature, food waste or greener neighbourhoods
The Hackney Council-listed programme ranges from a summer solstice afternoon in Hackney Wick to guided ecology walks, litter picks, gardening sessions, a family cooking class and hands-on repair events.
Free events across gardens, parks and repair spaces
The week opens on Saturday 20 June with a summer solstice open afternoon at Trowbridge Gardens in Hackney Wick from 2.30pm to 5.30pm. Hackney Herbal will host free activities for all ages, with herbal teas, cakes and a plant sale. Visitors are asked to bring their own mug.
The next morning, Sunday 21 June, volunteers will meet by London Fields Lido at 10am for a community litter pick in London Fields. Equipment will be provided, and the session is aimed at people who want to help keep the park cleaner while meeting others involved in local environmental action.
On Monday 22 June, the focus shifts indoors and outdoors. Kundakala will run a clothes repair workshop at Pembury Community Centre from 10am to noon, teaching simple mending techniques such as replacing buttons, hand-sewing holes and adding patches. Participants can bring clothing that needs those repairs. Later that day, ecologist and veteran tree specialist Russell Miller will lead a guided walk in Clissold Park from 5pm to 6.30pm on trees, ecology and the climate emergency.
The midweek programme covers food, gardening and rewilding
Wednesday 24 June is one of the busiest days in the Hackney programme. A volunteer action day at the Woodshop of Recycled Delights, Garden of Earthly Delights, 161 Graham Road, runs from noon to 4pm. Volunteers can learn how to use woodworking tools, reclaim timber, fix furniture and build planters or structures for community projects.
A low-pressure gardening club will also meet from noon to 1pm at Gainsborough Canal Garden, by the bridge over the River Lea to Here East. The session is open to people with no gardening experience and is focused on restoring the green space, supporting biodiversity and meeting new people.
Also on 24 June, the Round Chapel Old School Rooms in Lower Clapton will host a reusable nappy give and take from noon to 1.30pm, where people can collect preloved reusable nappies and baby clothes, connect with parents, reduce waste and access a £70 reusable nappy voucher.
That evening, Wildlife Gardeners of Haggerston will lead a Rewilding the Old River Lea guided walk at Hackney Marshes from 6.30pm to 8pm, looking at how the river is being restored to its natural, pre-industrial state.
Family cooking and weekend repair sessions
Families can join a zero-waste cooking class on Thursday 25 June from 5pm to 7pm at Liberty Hall, 128 Clapton Common. The session will cover plant-based ingredients, using parts of vegetables that are often thrown away, and easy recipes described by organisers as budget-friendly and sustainable. It is designed for families of all cooking abilities.
On Friday 26 June, the Tree Musketeers will host a volunteering session at Hackney Tree Nursery, Homerton Road, from 10am to 3pm. Tasks include potting, mulching, watering, weeding, pruning, propagation, woodland maintenance and caring for young trees. Tools and equipment will be provided.
Saturday 27 June brings three more practical sessions. A Clissold Park community litter pick will run from 10am to 11am, meeting by the fountain next to Clissold House, with equipment provided and volunteers of all ages welcome.
From 11am to 2pm, Hackney Fixing Factory at 4 Dispensary Lane will hold a community repair day for broken household items such as toasters, hairdryers and air fryers. People can work one-to-one with a skilled volunteer to diagnose and repair an item. The source states that reserving a repair spot in advance costs £5, while dropping in on the day is free.
The day ends with Rebugging the Planet – build a bee hotel at Robin Hood Garden, Spring Lane, from 2pm to 4pm. The session will show participants how to build bee hotels for solitary bees, with guest speaker Vicky Hird, author of Rebugging the Planet.

Hackney Council describes the borough programme as one of the largest free local programmes created for this year’s London Climate Action Week. Cllr Jacob Cable, Cabinet Member for Climate, Clean Air, Energy and Transport, said residents, community groups and local organisations were already helping make the capital greener and urged people to “take a look at what’s happening across the borough and give it a go.”
