Kaunas Modernises Lampėdis Lake Shores for Summer Season

Kaunas, Lithuania’s second-largest city, is finalising a major overhaul of its popular Lampėdis lakefront, transforming the area into a modern, inclusive leisure hub just in time for the official start of the swimming season on June 1st. The project represents a significant shift in the city’s approach to urban recreation, moving beyond basic sand-and-water facilities to a fully integrated sports and wellness infrastructure.

The southern shores of Lampėdis, particularly near Gervių Street, have undergone a total reconstruction. Visitors returning this summer will find freshly laid sand, dedicated zones for outdoor fitness, and expanded children’s playgrounds. The initiative aims to provide a high-standard alternative to coastal resorts, catering to the growing demand for high-quality “blue spaces” within urban environments.

Enhanced Accessibility and Public Amenities

A core pillar of the renovation is inclusivity. Unlike previous iterations of the beach, the new infrastructure has been designed with universal access in mind. The site now features ramps, specialized paths, and stairs that accommodate people with mobility impairments. Furthermore, the city has introduced information stands specifically adapted for the visually impaired, ensuring that the recreational space is navigable for all citizens.

In addition to the physical upgrades, the municipality is introducing automated public toilets, outdoor showers, and fresh water drinking stations. These additions align Kaunas with modern European standards for public parks and beaches, focusing on hygiene and convenience for families and long-stay visitors. To support the local economy, designated areas for food and beverage vendors have also been integrated into the site plan.

Traffic Management and Pedestrian Safety

One of the most significant logistical changes involves the management of vehicle traffic near the water. Historically, the area around Gervių Street suffered from chaotic parking and congestion, which often compromised pedestrian safety. To resolve this, the city has established a new, spacious parking lot and installed automated barriers to restrict vehicle access further down the street.

Martynas Matusevičius, Head of the Transport and Traffic Management Department at Kaunas Municipality, noted that the new barrier system is designed to create a safe, pedestrian-only zone near the beach entrances. This move reflects a broader trend in European urban planning where car access is deprioritised in favour of safe, walkable public zones.

A City-Wide Preparation for Summer

The Kaunas sports school “Bangpūtys” is currently finalizing the recruitment and training of lifeguard teams to staff these locations. Simultaneously, the city is conducting rigorous water quality and sand safety tests to ensure all sites meet public health standards before the crowds arrive.

Looking beyond the immediate summer season, the development of Lampėdis also includes a professional sporting dimension. An international-standard rowing track has been installed, and a judges’ tower is scheduled for completion by the end of the year, positioning the lake as a future venue for international water sports competitions.
