Latvia Issues Airspace Warning as NATO Jets Scramble Over Drone Threat

The Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) have issued an urgent alert regarding a potential threat to the country’s airspace, covering several eastern and central regions. The warning, which was triggered following the detection of suspicious aerial activity, has led to the activation of NATO Baltic Air Policing mission fighters and a significant reinforcement of ground-based air defense units along the nation’s eastern border.

The alert specifically affects the municipalities of Krāslava, Ludza, Rēzekne, Preiļi, Madona, Cēsis, Gulbene, and Smiltenes. While initial reports focused on the border regions adjacent to Russia and Belarus, the inclusion of central districts like Cēsis and Smiltene indicates a broader surveillance area than previous localized incidents. The NBS Information Analysis and Management Department confirmed that military assets are currently monitoring the situation in real-time alongside NATO allies to ensure an immediate response to any potential violation of sovereign airspace.

In response to the potential threat, military authorities have issued specific instructions for civilians residing in the affected municipalities. The primary directive is for residents to remain indoors and adhere to the “two-wall principle.” This safety measure involves staying in a room that has at least two walls between the individual and the exterior of the building, which provides significantly better protection against potential debris or blast effects should an object fall or be intercepted.

Residents are also advised to close all windows and doors securely. If a low-flying, suspicious, or dangerous-looking object—such as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)—is spotted, the public is strictly warned not to approach it. Instead, sightings should be reported immediately to the emergency services by calling 112. The NBS has stated that they will provide a follow-up notification as soon as the threat level is downgraded or the situation is resolved.

Geopolitical Context and the Eastern Flank

This latest escalation comes as Latvia, a frontline NATO member, faces increasing pressure on its borders due to Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine. The Latvian Ministry of Defense has previously warned that as long as the conflict continues, the risk of foreign drones entering or approaching Latvian airspace remains high. This incident follows a high-profile event in September when a Russian “Shahed” drone, armed with explosives, crashed in the Rēzekne district after drifting from Belarus.

In response to these recurring incursions, Latvia has been aggressively bolstering its “Baltic Defense Line.” This includes the deployment of additional air defense units and specialized electronic warfare equipment designed to detect and neutralize UAVs. The NATO Baltic Air Policing mission, which frequently involves the UK’s Royal Air Force (RAF) alongside other allied nations, remains on high alert to intercept any unidentified aircraft that fail to communicate with air traffic control or enter restricted zones.
