Maurice Eglin appointed to lead North Northamptonshire civic duties
Maurice Eglin has been elected as the new Chair of North Northamptonshire Council for the 2026/27 civic year. The appointment was confirmed during the Annual Full Council meeting on Thursday, May 21, where Andy Sims was also named Deputy Chair. The transition follows the service of Cllr Helen Campbell, who held the ceremonial role over the previous year.
Civic leadership and charitable focus
The role of the Chair remains primarily ceremonial, involving the representation of the region at official functions and presiding over Full Council sessions. For his upcoming tenure, Cllr Eglin announced that his official support will benefit Wicksteed Park and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.
During the same session, the council’s Executive portfolios were established. Martin Griffiths continues his role as Leader, with Graham Cheatley serving as Deputy Leader while maintaining his responsibilities for Finance, Efficiency, and Change. This administrative confirmation follows similar structural updates in the region, such as the West Northamptonshire leadership reshuffle.

Recognition for eminent public service
A special meeting held prior to the main council session saw six former councillors enrolled as Honorary Aldermen and Alderwomen. This distinction is reserved for individuals who have served for at least 12 years and demonstrated a record of outstanding contribution to the local area.
The newly appointed honorary members include:

- Tim Allebone: Served 22 years on the Borough Council of Wellingborough and the unitary authority, including a term as Mayor.
- Tom Beattie: Former Corby leader for a decade and a recipient of the LGIU Council Leader of the Year award.
- Ray Beeby: Dedicated 30 years to Corby-based councils and served twice as Mayor.
- Dudley Hughes: Held chair positions at both East Northamptonshire and the former County Council.
- Sylvia Hughes: Former Cabinet Member for Public Health and Chair of the Health and Wellbeing Board.
- Andrew Scarborough: A long-serving magistrate and former Wellingborough deputy leader frequently involved in Wellingborough community investment initiatives.
These honorary titles grant the individuals the right to attend and participate in specific civic ceremonies and meetings throughout the municipal year.
