Milton Keynes City Council has marked Volunteers’ Week by recognising local people who give their time to support families across the city’s Family Centres.
A special lunch and awards presentation was held for volunteers working alongside Family Centre staff. More than 50 volunteers help across the city’s 10 centres, which welcome more than 5,000 residents each month and remain open throughout the year.
Volunteers keep busy centres running
The Family Centres offer activities and courses for families with children, as well as support for adults. Volunteers help with the everyday work that keeps the centres accessible, from welcoming visitors and setting up group activities to answering phones and gardening.

They also support the local Community Larder, helping to organise and distribute food and household essentials to residents who need extra help.
Support that reaches beyond one visit
RJ, a volunteer at Moorlands Family Centre, said volunteering came at a time of isolation and personal difficulty. They said the role helped build confidence, create new connections and improve wellbeing, eventually encouraging them to look for work. RJ now works part-time at the centre.

Maria, a volunteer at Hedgerows Family Centre, said the experience had been positive and rewarding, giving her the chance to help families and children while inspiring her to pursue a career in childcare.
Awards lunch marks Volunteers’ Week
Councillor Peter Cannon, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said volunteers play an important role in supporting Family Centres across Milton Keynes.

He said their time, care and dedication help centre teams reach more people and offer a wider range of support to families who need it.
