Oswestry residents now served by ‘Excellent’ rated leisure centre

Oswestry Leisure Centre has officially secured a ‘Quest Excellent’ rating, marking the first time the facility has reached the top tier of national quality benchmarking. The assessment, conducted in February 2026, validates the centre’s performance across customer experience, operational safety, and community inclusion.

Managed by the Shropshire Community Leisure Trust (SCLT) in partnership with Serco Leisure, the facility underwent a rigorous evaluation by Quest, the UK leisure industry’s leading quality scheme developed by Sport England. Achieving this status places the Oswestry site among the highest-performing leisure facilities in the country, moving up from its previous ‘Very Good’ standing.

National recognition for local standards

The inspection report highlighted the centre’s operational discipline, specifically noting the high standards of pool supervision and safety. Beyond safety protocols, the assessors praised the professionalism of the staff and the visible commitment to maintaining a clean, welcoming environment for all visitors. This accreditation serves as a formal verification that the facility meets strict national requirements for leadership and risk management.

Community wellbeing and health initiatives

The Quest assessment also focused on the social value provided to the local area. Inspectors recognised the success of inclusive health programmes such as Healthy Life and GoodBoost, which offer personalised support for residents looking to improve their physical activity levels. These initiatives are designed to align with Shropshire Council health priorities, ensuring that the leisure centre functions, like other local leisure centres, as more than just a gym, but as a hub for long-term community wellness.

The practical picture

  • Top-tier rating: First ‘Excellent’ score for Oswestry Leisure Centre.
  • Safety focus: High marks for pool supervision and risk management.
  • Sustainability: Recognition for real-time energy monitoring and ISO-aligned environmental procedures.
  • Personalised health programmes like GoodBoost are helping residents transition into regular exercise.

Future benchmarks for Shropshire facilities

Rhys Collins, Partnership Manager for Shropshire Community Leisure Trust, noted that the Oswestry team has set a high benchmark for other facilities in the region. While sites in Shrewsbury, Market Drayton, Whitchurch, and Bishops Castle currently hold ‘Very Good’ ratings, they are scheduled for their own assessments later this year.

Sarah Marston, portfolio holder for communities and environment at Shropshire Council, confirmed that the achievement reflects the dedication of the local team in providing a safe and inclusive space for residents. The centre continues to implement structured training pathways and apprenticeships to maintain these service levels as membership and participation rates grow.
