Better Transport Week Activities will run across Plymouth from Monday 15 June to Friday 19 June, with free sessions at Plymouth Rail Station, Armada Way, Royal Parade, Brickfields Athletics Track, Coypool and Royal William Yard.
The five-day Festival/Workshop Series is aimed at the general public and focuses on greener ways to travel, including trains, buses, walking and cycling. Times vary by day, from morning advice stands to afternoon bike taster sessions, and some activities require booking by email.
Plymouth City Council and Plymotion said the programme will give residents hands-on opportunities to try different travel options, get expert advice and find out about incentives for using more sustainable transport. Families planning another free transport-focused day out may also find Plymouth’s Big Green Trail useful, including its bike checks and trail bus details.
Five days of greener travel sessions across Plymouth
The week opens on Monday 15 June with Train Day at Plymouth’s main rail station on North Road. The Plymotion team will host a stand from 9.30am to 3.30pm, offering general travel advice and information on incentives for making rail travel part of everyday journeys.
Tuesday 16 June turns the focus to buses, with a bus accessibility event on the Armada Way piazza from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Visitors will be able to speak to representatives from the Plymouth Bus Partnership, explore the latest buses, try a mobility scooter and take part in activities, games and giveaways.
On Wednesday 17 June, Walk Day takes participants from the city centre to the coast. Attendees will meet at 10.20am at the A14 stop on Royal Parade, take a bus to Heybrook Bay, then join a five-kilometre guided coastal walk to Wembury Beach, followed by a picnic and return journey. Places must be reserved by the published contact details.
Cycling trials and business travel advice later in the week
Thursday 18 June is Bike Day, with two different ways to try cycling. An adaptive e-cycling session will take place at Brickfields Athletics Track from 10.30am to midday, delivered with British Cycling and Plymouth Active. No booking is required for that session.
Later the same day, Ice Trike taster sessions will depart from Plymouth Bike Hire at Coypool at 1.30pm and 2.30pm. The Ice Trike is described by the council as a low-to-the-ground, three-wheeled electric bike designed for comfort and stability. Booking is required by the published contact details.
The final day, Friday 19 June, is Business Day at Royal William Yard. The all-day event will run on the green from 9am to 4pm, with Bikespace’s Dr Bike service offering free safety checks and minor repairs. Plymotion will also be on site with advice and incentives promoting walking, cycling and bus travel across Plymouth.
