Stoke-on-Trent Mayor Raises £15,000 for Local Charities

Three local organisations have received a share of £15,884.49 following a year of intensive fundraising by the former Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, Councillor Steve Watkins.

Supporting local causes

The funds were raised during Councillor Watkins’ 12-month term in office. The proceeds have been distributed to Help for Heroes, Saltbox, and the National Literacy Trust Stoke-on-Trent. These organisations were selected for their specific contributions to the city’s social fabric, ranging from veteran support to child literacy and elderly care.

Community-led fundraising initiatives

To reach the total, the Lord Mayor’s office hosted a variety of events throughout the year. Highlights included a 1920s-themed afternoon tea and the publication of a children’s book authored by the former Lady Mayoress, Councillor Lynn Watkins. The book, which provided a unique perspective on the mayoral year, proved popular with families across the city.

Impact on city services

The donations are set to fund specific local services. Help for Heroes confirmed the funds could support psychological wellbeing practitioners for veterans or provide essential financial relief grants. Meanwhile, Saltbox will direct their share toward the ongoing operation of the Carelink service, which combats loneliness among older residents through telephone befriending and local ‘Chatty Cafes.’

Lois Bateman, Hub Manager for the National Literacy Trust in Stoke-on-Trent, noted that the funding will enable the delivery of the ‘Tales in the Park’ family storytelling festivals this summer. This initiative aims to ensure children across the city have consistent access to books and reading support during the school holidays.
