Construction has officially commenced on a new municipal kindergarten in the Balsiai district of Vilnius, marking a significant shift in how the Lithuanian capital approaches educational infrastructure. The facility, located at Aušrinės St. 10A, is designed to integrate seamlessly into the surrounding pine forest, offering a nature-centric learning environment for 280 children across 14 groups.
A symbolic time capsule was buried at the site this week to mark the start of the project, which is being managed by the Vilnius Development Company (Vilniaus vystymo kompanija). The project represents a €11.72 million (£9.8 million) investment in the city’s growing northern suburbs, where young families have long advocated for better access to local childcare.
Architectural Integration with the Natural Landscape
The design of the new kindergarten, developed by the architectural firm Ponama, focuses on a “human-scale” approach that mimics the existing residential urban fabric rather than imposing a monolithic structure on the environment. The building will consist of six distinct volumes: three dedicated to classroom groups and two central blocks housing a multi-functional hall, administrative offices, and auxiliary zones. A sixth block will house a dedicated swimming pool.

Architect Vidmantas Kančiauskas noted that the primary challenge was minimizing the impact on the existing ecosystem. To achieve this, the pine forest on the plot will be preserved and utilized as an active educational space. The facility will feature a cognitive trail with various activity zones, including swings, climbing frames, and a greenhouse.
Play areas are strategically zoned by age: younger children will have spaces closer to the main building, while older children will have access to play areas deeper within the forest. An internal courtyard, nestled under the natural forest canopy, will serve as the primary hub for outdoor activities, featuring pavilions and integrated greenery.

Community-Led Design and Modern Facilities
The project is the result of collaborative planning, including creative workshops with the Balsiai community. These sessions informed the final layout, ensuring the facility meets the specific expectations of local residents. Each classroom wing will have independent entrances from the street and direct exits to the internal courtyard, facilitating better flow and safety.
Inside, the groups are designed with modern pedagogical needs in mind, featuring kitchenettes, dedicated rest zones with stackable beds to maximize space, and integrated sanitary facilities. The assembly hall is designed to connect with an outdoor event space, allowing for large community gatherings that can transition between indoor and outdoor environments depending on the season.

A Strategic Shift in Educational Infrastructure
This project is part of a broader, accelerated expansion of educational facilities in Vilnius. For decades following Lithuania’s independence, the capital saw very few new municipal kindergartens built—only three were completed over a 30-year period. The current administration is working to reverse this trend through a unique financing and development model.
The Balsiai kindergarten is one of nine new educational projects currently in the pipeline. Under this development model, five new kindergartens are planned for completion across the city in the coming years, including sites in Pajautos, Bieliūnų, Kernavės, and Braškių streets. Additionally, four new schools are being planned to address the capacity crunch in rapidly expanding residential areas.
