Latvian national carrier airBaltic has announced a further expansion of its network from the Lithuanian capital, introducing a new direct seasonal route between Vilnius and Geneva, Switzerland. The service is scheduled to commence on January 2, 2027, and will operate through the peak winter season until March 20, 2027. This move marks a strategic effort to capture the growing demand for winter sports travel and diplomatic connectivity between the Baltic region and Western Europe.
The flights will be operated once weekly, specifically on Saturdays, catering primarily to the holiday market and weekend travelers. With an estimated flight duration of 2 hours and 50 minutes, the route significantly reduces travel time compared to existing indirect options. This addition brings the total number of direct routes operated by airBaltic from Vilnius to 12 for the upcoming winter season.
Strategic Expansion into the Swiss Market
The introduction of the Geneva route follows the airline’s recent launch of flights to Zurich, effectively doubling airBaltic’s direct footprint in Switzerland from Lithuania. According to Mantas Vrubliauskas, Vice President of Network Management at airBaltic, the route is specifically designed to improve connectivity during the winter months when the Swiss Alps are a primary draw for regional travelers.
Beyond leisure, the route serves a functional purpose for business and diplomatic circles, given Geneva’s status as a global hub for international organizations. By offering a second Swiss gateway, the airline aims to provide passengers with greater flexibility and more comprehensive travel options. The airline’s partnership with SWISS International Air Lines further enhances this connectivity, allowing passengers to access a broader global network through connecting flights in both Zurich and Geneva.
Operational Details and Fleet Modernization
The new service will utilize the airline’s modern fleet of Airbus A220-300 aircraft. This aircraft type is central to airBaltic’s operational strategy, known for its fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. For travelers, one of the most notable features of this fleet expansion is the integration of high-speed satellite internet.

As part of its technological upgrade, airBaltic is the first European carrier to offer free, high-speed SpaceX Starlink internet on its flights. Currently, more than half of the airline’s aircraft are equipped with this service, with plans to outfit the entire fleet. This amenity is positioned as a significant competitive advantage for the airline as it seeks to attract tech-savvy travelers and business professionals on its European routes.
Strengthening the Baltic Aviation Hub
Simonas Bartkus, CEO of Lithuanian Airports, noted that the connection between Lithuania and Switzerland is currently at a historical high. The addition of Geneva is seen as a response to sustained passenger demand that has already been evidenced by the performance of the Zurich route. Airport officials have expressed optimism that if the seasonal performance meets expectations, there is a strong possibility the carrier will consider extending the route into the summer season.
In addition to the Vilnius expansion, airBaltic continues to maintain its presence in other Lithuanian regions. For the winter season, the airline will continue operating flights from Palanga to Riga, Amsterdam, and Tenerife. This comprehensive network reinforces airBaltic’s position as the leading carrier in the Baltic States, currently connecting the region to over 80 destinations across Europe and the Middle East.
