Ellesmere A495 closures move to next resurfacing phase

By Hiyastar Local Desk

Drivers using the A495 through Ellesmere should plan around weekday daytime closures as Shropshire Council’s resurfacing programme moves into its next stage.

The work began on 2 June 2026 and is being carried out in four phases by Kier Infrastructure on behalf of Shropshire Council. Phase 2, covering the stretch from The Red Lion to The Boathouse, is taking place this week. Phase 3 is due to start on Monday, 15 June.

Weekday closure hours on the A495

A road closure is in place during each phase between 9.30am and 4pm, Monday to Friday only.

Shropshire Council said the closures are being used to protect road users and the workforce while resurfacing is under way. Drivers should expect disruption during those hours and allow extra time for local journeys, deliveries, school runs and appointments in and around Ellesmere.

Outside the closure window, motorists should still take care near the works area because road surfaces, temporary traffic management and access arrangements can change as each phase progresses.

Phase schedule for the Ellesmere resurfacing work

Phase Affected stretch and timing
Phase 1 Sparbridge roundabout to The Red Lion; completed last week
Phase 2 The Red Lion to The Boathouse; being carried out this week
Phase 3 The Boathouse to Tunnel Bank; starts Monday, 15 June 2026
Phase 4 Further programme details to follow from the council

Councillor David Vasmer, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for highways, and local councillor Rosie Radford visited the site to see the resurfacing work and discuss progress.

Route affected through Ellesmere

The scheme covers sections of the A495 in Ellesmere, including the route between Sparbridge roundabout, The Red Lion, The Boathouse and Tunnel Bank.

That makes the works relevant for local residents, commuters, businesses and visitors travelling through the town during the daytime closure periods. The A495 is a key local route, so short trips may need rerouting while each section is closed.

Travel advice before setting off

Check the phase location before travelling, especially if your journey depends on access near The Red Lion, The Boathouse or Tunnel Bank.

Use alternative routes during the 9.30am to 4pm weekday closure window where possible. Anyone with time-sensitive appointments should leave earlier than usual and watch for signed diversion routes near the works area.

Work is being delivered by Kier Infrastructure for Shropshire Council, with resurfacing continuing phase by phase along the A495.
