The Zemgale Region Competence Development Centre (ZRKAC) has officially concluded the evaluation of applications for the Jelgava municipality’s summer youth employment program. This year, 110 students from grades 9 to 11 have been selected to take part in the initiative, which offers a unique bridge between the classroom and the professional world. As of May 8, notifications have been dispatched to the successful candidates via the email addresses provided during the application process, marking the start of a busy summer season for the city’s youth.

High Demand and Competitive Selection

The program’s popularity continues to surge, reflecting a growing desire among young people in Jelgava to gain financial independence and professional insight. This year, the competition was particularly stiff; ZRKAC received 315 applications from students representing 25 different educational institutions. With only 110 positions available, the selection process was rigorous.

Līga Damberga, a career consultant at ZRKAC, noted that 9th-grade students were the most active applicants this year. Interestingly, the medical field emerged as the top choice for many, with a significant number of youths eager to experience the daily operations of healthcare facilities. This high level of engagement from both students and local businesses underscores the program’s vital role in the community’s socio-economic fabric, providing a structured environment for the next generation to test their career aspirations.

A Diverse Range of Professional Opportunities

A total of 52 employers have stepped up to offer more than 250 vacancies, though the municipal program specifically funds a subset of these 110 positions. Notably, 13 employers are participating for the first time this year, expanding the horizons for local students. These new participants include diverse businesses such as the landscape construction firm “Alejas projekti,” the gift and floral decor provider “Lindy Flora,” the holiday home “Zeltāres,” and industrial parts supplier “PRO Mehanika.”

Other participants include SIA RB Motors and the family medical practice EM Doktorats. This variety ensures that students are not just performing menial tasks but are being integrated into sectors that drive the local economy, from retail and mechanics to healthcare and environmental design. For many, this will be their first formal employment contract, providing essential lessons in workplace etiquette, responsibility, and financial management.

Financial Investment and Program Structure

Supporting this initiative is a substantial financial commitment from the Jelgava municipality, which has allocated a total of €69,920 to fund the student positions this summer. The program is not just about temporary work; it is a strategic investment in the local workforce.

The employment structure is designed to be accessible yet professional:
* Work Duration: Three weeks per student.
* Daily Hours: Six hours per day.
* Total Commitment: 90 hours per participant.
* Program Window: June 1 to August 29.

Essential Information for Selected Participants

For the 110 students who received their acceptance emails on May 8, the next phase involves preparing for their specific work placements. The program is scheduled to run throughout the summer, with individual placements staggered to accommodate both employer needs and student availability.

Students are advised to keep a close eye on their emails for further instructions regarding contract signings and specific start dates from their assigned employers. It is crucial that participants respond promptly to these communications to secure their spots. For those who were not selected this year, the high volume of vacancies offered by the 52 participating employers suggests that other, non-municipally funded opportunities may still exist within the private sector in the Jelgava region. The ZRKAC encourages all students to continue seeking career-building experiences, even outside the formal municipal program.
