Liepāja Museum Night: Carnival Youth to Headline Late-Night Arts Marathon
Liepāja is preparing for a late-night cultural takeover as the city hosts its annual European Museum Night on Friday, May 22. Unlike the rest of Latvia, which typically observes the event on Saturday, the coastal “City of Wind” has moved its festivities forward to accommodate a massive weekend of celebrations, including the Līva Village Festival and the National Youth Dance Festival.
From 17:00 until 01:00, museums, galleries, and public spaces across the city will transform into interactive storytelling hubs. The evening’s centerpiece is a headline performance by Latvia’s premier indie-pop export, Carnival Youth, who will take the stage in the Liepāja Museum garden at 23:00.

Inside the museum, visitors can explore exhibitions for free, participate in calligraphy workshops led by artist Dzintra Vīriņa, or attend the “Voice Between Pages” reading of Žanis Baumanis’s diaries.
Historical Immersion and Interactive Exhibits
For those seeking a more historical perspective, the 17th–19th Century Interior Museum (Madame Hoyer’s Guest House) offers a journey back in time. The evening begins with the world music group “UDUDU,” followed by an amateur theater performance of “Münchhausen’s Wedding.” The courtyard will host a perfume-making workshop and a dramatic fire-juggling show at midnight.
At the Liepāja Occupation Museum, the tone shifts to a mix of education and modern technology. The program features drone demonstrations alongside inspections of National Guard (Zemessardze) weaponry and a film program documenting Latvia’s history. A special highlight includes Guntis Veits, the lead singer of the legendary Latvian band “Credo,” presenting a musical narrative titled “Finally, Guntis Veits Has Made It to the Museum.”

Educational and Creative Hubs
Local educational institutions are also opening their doors with specialized programming:
- RTU Liepāja Academy: Focuses on the evolution of language, offering phonetic games and spelling challenges for all ages, complemented by performances from the folk dance ensemble “Banga.”
- Liepāja State Gymnasium: Offers a nostalgic look at Soviet-era school supplies and an exhibition of ancient technical drawings, including a music stand once used by the world-renowned composer Raimonds Pauls.
- Golt’s Creative House: Dedicated to the works of artist Miķelis Golts, featuring an immersive exhibition in the building’s windows and a workshop titled “Create Your Object’s Story.”
Thematic Background: The Adventures of an Object
This year’s national theme for Museum Night is “The Adventures of an Object,” inspired by a quote from the Latvian poet Rainis: “Even a rag was once a shirt of honor.” The theme encourages visitors to look beyond the physical form of museum artifacts and consider their changing value and history over time.
To help visitors navigate the various sites, the “Libau Train” will operate a continuous loop starting from the Liepāja Museum, ensuring that even those on the other side of the Trade Canal can easily access the main festivities.
