Lithuania has officially opened registration for the national hiking initiative “Mossy Kilometers” (Samaningi kilometrai), a project designed to bridge the gap between historical remembrance and active lifestyle. Scheduled for May 16, the initiative invites organizations, communities, families, and individuals to register for a series of treks that trace the footsteps of the nation’s post-war resistance fighters.
Now in its third consecutive year, the project is a collaborative effort between the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union and the Ministry of National Defence. It aims to transform the way the public interacts with the history of the Freedom Struggles, moving away from formal ceremonies toward a model of experiential learning. By physically walking the same forest paths once used by the partisans, participants are encouraged to reflect on the resilience and psychological endurance required during the mid-20th-century occupation.
The Legacy of the Forest Brothers
The initiative is timed to coincide with the Day of Partisans, Army, and Society Unity, traditionally observed on the third weekend of May. For Lithuania, the forest is not merely a landscape but a historical sanctuary. Between 1944 and 1953, thousands of Lithuanians, known as the “Forest Brothers,” lived in hidden bunkers and moved through the dense woodlands to wage a guerrilla war against Soviet forces.
Organizers emphasize that for these fighters, hiking was not a leisure activity but a constant state of existence—a means of survival, communication, and combat. The “Mossy Kilometers” project asks participants to imagine the reality of moving through the unknown, facing the same fears and uncertainties that the partisans experienced decades ago. This connection to a specific physical location—the forest, the moss, and the authentic terrain—is intended to make the historical narrative more tangible and personal.

A Growing National and International Movement
While the current focus is on the upcoming May events, the initiative is scaling up for a significant milestone in 2026. Plans are already in motion to organize ten major hikes across Lithuania and nine additional treks within Lithuanian communities abroad. This expansion reflects a growing interest in “patriotic tourism,” where historical education is integrated into outdoor recreation.
For organizations and businesses, the initiative serves as a unique team-building format. Rather than a standard corporate retreat, the shared physical effort and the atmospheric storytelling provided along the routes offer a deeper sense of communal purpose. The organizers have called on schools, companies, and social groups to form teams and register collectively to foster a sense of unity similar to that of the historical resistance units.
Event Details and the Minaičiai Commemoration
A primary focus for the May 16 event will be in the Radviliškis district, specifically at the Minaičiai Partisan Memorial. This site holds immense historical weight as the location where the Declaration of February 16, 1949, was signed, establishing the legal and political framework for the Lithuanian resistance.

The hike in Minaičiai is scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM, with on-site registration open from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Participants can also register in advance through the official portal at www.samaningikm.lt. The route is designed to lead hikers through authentic locations associated with the 1949 Declaration.
Upon completing the trek, participants will be greeted with traditional “Riflemen’s treats”—hearty field kitchen meals provided by the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union. The day will conclude with the “Warriors of the Twilight” (Sutemų karžygiai) festival, an event blending historical memory with artistic performances. This festival serves as a cultural bookend to the physical journey, providing a space for hikers to decompress and reflect on the stories they encountered along the trail.
