Merton Launches New Carers Week Support and Free Activities

Merton Council has announced a dedicated program of events and expanded support services to mark Carers Week, running from 10 June to 12 June 2026. With an estimated 13,000 residents in the borough currently providing care for friends, family, or neighbours, these initiatives aim to offer respite, social connection, and practical assistance to those balancing the demands of caregiving.

All events scheduled for the week are free of charge and open to local carers and the individuals they support. The program is designed to foster community connection while providing tangible relief for those in caring roles.

Event Schedule at a Glance

Residents are encouraged to participate in the following community activities held across the borough:

Event Date Venue
Cream Tea 10 June Vestry Hall
Singing for the Brain 11 June St. Lukes Church
Lunch and Walk for Male Carers 12 June Various Locations

Among the highlights is the “Singing for the Brain” taster session, a music-based activity specifically tailored for residents living with dementia and their carers. This session will take place on Thursday, 11 June, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am at the Hall at St. Lukes Church in Wimbledon Park.

Expanded Support and Financial Assistance

Beyond the scheduled events, the council is strengthening its long-term support network. A key development is the increased funding for the Carers Discretionary Payment. This grant provides a one-off financial contribution intended to help carers fund short breaks, access training courses, or purchase essential equipment and items necessary for their caring responsibilities.

Furthermore, the local support network is growing, bringing the total number of available support groups in Merton to 11. Two new additions are now available for residents:

  • Mencap Meet Ups: A specialized group for carers of individuals with learning disabilities or autism, scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month.
  • Carers First Support Group: A new monthly meeting hosted at the Wimbledon Library on the last Tuesday of the month.

How to Access Support and Bookings

Councillor Leader Ross Garrod emphasized that while caring for loved ones is a rewarding commitment, the new initiatives are designed to provide necessary relief and community connection.

For residents wishing to attend the Carers Week events, it is recommended to visit the official Merton Council website. The site provides the full, up-to-date schedule of activities, including specific timings and any necessary booking requirements for individual sessions. Additionally, those seeking information regarding formal carers’ assessments or ongoing support services can find comprehensive details and contact pathways through the council’s online portal.
