Plymouth school hosts free Family Hub launch on 19 June

Families in Plymouth will be able to visit a new satellite Family Hub at Laira Green Primary School during a free launch event on Friday 19 June.

The event runs from 3pm to 5pm at Laira Green Primary School in Plymouth. It is open to parents, carers and children, with free activities for children and information for adults about the support services now being delivered from the school site, while families looking for other free local activities can find transport-focused sessions elsewhere in Plymouth.

The new satellite Family Hub has been set up by Laira Green Primary School in partnership with Barnardo’s, bringing family and wellbeing support into a familiar school setting for the local community.

The school says the launch event will include free activities for children while parents and carers can find out about the services available through the new hub.

The satellite Family Hub means a range of Barnardo’s support services will be delivered directly from the school site. The aim is to make it easier for families to access help in a place already known to many local children and parents.

Barnardo’s services brought closer to families

Family Hubs in Plymouth support families from pregnancy, through childhood and up to age 19. Support can continue up to age 25 for young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Barnardo’s works with children, young people and families facing a range of challenges. According to the council announcement, the charity’s support includes emotional wellbeing, mental health, family relationships, parenting guidance, attendance and engagement, safeguarding and early intervention services.

At Laira Green Primary School, the new satellite hub is expected to create opportunities for families to engage with experienced Barnardo’s practitioners. Support may include one-to-one help, targeted programmes and signposting to additional services.

For families comparing local support options, hiyastar.co.uk has also covered other free Family Hub launch events, including Family Hub launches for parents and carers.

Support in a familiar school setting

The partnership places support services inside a school that already sits at the centre of daily life for many local families. The council says this should help remove barriers that can stop people seeking help, especially when families are unsure where to begin or need earlier support.

Councillor Tess Blight, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Apprenticeships, said the partnership would strengthen support for children and families in the community by bringing services closer to where people live and learn.

Councillor Jemima Laing, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said the expansion of the Family Hubs offer gives parents and carers a place to access support, attend events and liaise with service providers.

Claire Jones, Headteacher of Laira Green Primary School, said schools are often at the heart of local neighbourhoods and that working with Barnardo’s would help families access specialist services when they need them most.

What parents and carers can do on the day

Parents and carers who attend the launch event can use the two-hour session to meet people connected with the new hub and ask about the support available through Barnardo’s at the school.

The confirmed activities are straightforward: free activities for children, information for adults about services, and an opportunity to find out how the satellite Family Hub will operate from Laira Green Primary School.

No booking, transport or accessibility details were included in the source announcement. The confirmed launch details are Friday 19 June, 3pm to 5pm, at Laira Green Primary School in Plymouth.
