Plymouth Thanks Volunteers With Free Community Events: what residents need to know

By the hiyastar.co.uk editorial team

Plymouth is marking Volunteers’ Week with free activities and celebration events for people who give their time across the city.

The UK-wide campaign runs from 1 to 7 June, with Plymouth City Council using the week to recognise volunteers who support residents, local services, community venues, sports, environmental work and charities.

Volunteers’ Week runs from 1 to 7 June

Volunteers’ Week is held across the UK to highlight the role of people who offer their time without pay. In Plymouth, that includes work with vulnerable residents, environmental projects, leisure activities, heritage sites and community support networks.

The council says almost 700 volunteers work within its own services, helping teams reach more residents and support local projects.

Free activities and family events across the city

Plymouth City Council is working with the city’s Volunteer Coordinators Network and local partners including The Box, Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, Plymouth Active Leisure, the National Trust, Plymouth Wellbeing Hub Network, Four Greens Community Trust and Jeremiah’s Journey.

The programme includes free activities during Volunteers’ Week, with extra events in May and June for volunteers and their families. The aim is to thank existing volunteers, show the difference their work makes and encourage more residents to get involved.

Tinside Lido event will bring volunteers together

One celebration event will take place at Tinside Lido, where volunteers are invited to gather for an evening with music, food and drinks overlooking Plymouth Sound.

The event has been organised by the council and Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, with funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Community Development, said volunteers are “at the heart of Plymouth” and described them as people who care for residents, animals, the environment, sports, activities and buildings.

“To all of Plymouth’s volunteers we want to say a very big ‘Thank You’, we are incredibly grateful for your continued generosity and commitment,” he said.
