Foster carers, children and local authority teams across the East Midlands came together during Foster Care Fortnight 2026, with events held from 11 to 24 May to recognise the role of fostering families and encourage new residents to learn more.
The regional programme included family gatherings, awards, information sessions and activities for children and young people. It was organised under the national Foster Care Fortnight campaign led by The Fostering Network, with local activity supported by Foster for East Midlands Councils.
Family events across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire
One of the main gatherings was the Foster Care Family Fun Day at South Normanton Post Mill, where families from Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council took part in activities including sports, music, dance, storytelling, face painting, arts and crafts, soft play and martial arts displays.
The day also included a joint pledge of support for fostering from cabinet members representing the four councils. Josh MacAlister, Minister for Children and Families, sent a written pledge recognising the work of local authorities and carers in the region.
Other events included Nottinghamshire Fostering’s Got Talent, where children and young people in care shared creative work and skills, and the Derbyshire Believes in Me Awards at County Hall, which recognised foster families across the county. Foster children and families also attended cinema screenings in Nottingham and Derby.

Recruitment sessions for prospective carers
Alongside the celebrations, Foster for East Midlands Councils ran seven fostering information events, both online and in person. These sessions were aimed at residents considering becoming foster carers, giving them a chance to hear from experienced carers and understand the support available through local authority fostering services.
