An Annual Review is the yearly check of an EHCP. It looks at whether the support written into the plan is still meeting the child or young person’s needs, and whether any changes should be made.

Parents, carers and young people can take part

The council says it wants to hear from parent carers, children and young people. Young people can be supported to respond by family members, carers, schools, settings or another trusted adult.

Families are being asked to share views in the way that works best for them. The council has separate survey routes for parents and carers, and for children and young people.

Feedback sought on forms, systems and school guidance

The council is asking what is working well, what could be better, and how Annual Reviews currently help children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

The feedback will be used to look at several parts of the EHCP Annual Review process, including:

  • Annual Review forms
  • The online system used in the process
  • Guidance and support for schools

Changes could be introduced before the next school year

West Northamptonshire Council says it will consider the responses and use them to make improvements where possible. The aim is to introduce changes by the start of the next school year if the feedback and practical timetable allow it.

For SEND families, the review process can affect how support is recorded, discussed and adjusted across education, health and care. Responses submitted by 12 June will form part of the council’s work on how that process is handled locally.
