Wolverhampton free Kidical Mass ride returns to East Park

A marshalled family bike ride will roll out from East Park this month as Wolverhampton Kidical Mass returns for its third annual cycling event and fun day.

The free event takes place on Saturday 13 June, from 11am to 3pm, at East Park in Wolverhampton. It is aimed at families and children, with riders asked to register for free through Eventbrite before attending.

Free family ride from East Park through the city

Wolverhampton Kidical Mass 2026 is built around a gentle, marshalled bike ride of about 4.5 miles. The route starts at East Park, travels around the heart of Wolverhampton and returns to the park, taking in landmarks including Molineux where possible.

City of Wolverhampton Council says the route will use cycle lanes developed by the council wherever it can. Bike marshals will accompany riders, and the ride is due to be set off at about 12.30pm by Hugh Porter MBE, the city’s cycling ambassador, Commonwealth Games gold medallist and former world champion cyclist.

The event sits alongside national activity for The Great Big Green Week, running from 6 to 14 June, and Bike Week, running from 8 to 14 June. In Wolverhampton, the focus is practical: giving families a guided way to try public-road cycling together, with support around them.

Cycling skills, repairs and entertainment in the park

The fun day element runs across the full 11am to 3pm window, so families do not only need to attend for the ride itself. East Park will host stalls, refreshments, live entertainment and cycling activities throughout the day.

Planned activities include cycling skills sessions, bike repair workshops, and a free chance to try the East Park Cycle Speedway track. A Lime bike experience zone will also showcase electric pedal hire bikes.

For readers looking for broader affordable days out, hiyastar.co.uk also has a guide to free and low-cost family activities in Leicester, though Wolverhampton Kidical Mass is specifically a cycling-focused local event.

What families need to bring

Participants should bring roadworthy bikes if they want to take part in the ride. Helmets are advised for everyone taking part.

Younger children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian on the marshalled ride. Children in the park must also be accompanied by an adult.

The event is organised by No Limits to Health and City of Wolverhampton Council. It is made possible with UK Government funding and is supported by West Midlands Combined Authority and Transport for West Midlands, Cycling UK, British Cycling and the Walk, Wheel, Cycle Trust, among others.

Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, Cabinet Member for City Transport at City of Wolverhampton Council, said the event gives children and families the chance to build confidence riding together on public roads and cycle lanes.

Beccy Marston, West Midlands Active Travel Commissioner, said Kidical Mass brings communities together and gives local families a guided way to explore Wolverhampton’s growing cycle network.
