Vilnius Secures Landmark European Aviation Summit to Drive Regional Connectivity
Vilnius has officially secured the hosting rights for Routes Europe 2028, marking a significant milestone for the Lithuanian capital’s aviation and tourism sectors. This premier event, which rotates between European cities annually, serves as the primary platform for airlines, airports, and tourism authorities to negotiate future flight paths and regional connectivity.
The selection of Vilnius for the 2028 summit represents the first time Lithuania will host this high-profile gathering. It is expected to attract over 1,200 delegates, including decision-makers from 120 airlines and representatives from 220 airports and 60 tourism organizations worldwide.
Strategic Growth for Regional Connectivity
The primary objective of hosting Routes Europe is the expansion of the city’s flight network. The three-day event facilitates direct negotiations between airport operators and airline route planners. For the host city, this provides an unparalleled opportunity to showcase its market potential and advocate for new direct connections or increased frequencies on existing routes.

Lithuanian Transport Minister Juras Taminskas likened the event to the “Eurovision of aviation,” emphasizing that it places Vilnius on a central stage for the industry’s most influential players. By bringing these stakeholders to the capital, the city aims to demonstrate its readiness for further integration into the global travel network, potentially leading to long-term improvements in accessibility for both business and leisure travelers.
Economic Implications and Tourism Potential
Beyond the immediate influx of over a thousand high-spending business delegates, the summit is designed to generate lasting economic value. The Ministry of Economy and Innovation highlights that such international events serve as a catalyst for the local economy, not only through direct spending during the conference but by positioning Lithuania as a viable destination for future investment and tourism.

The event will be held at the Litexpo exhibition and congress center. In addition to the formal negotiations and panel discussions, the program includes familiarization tours for international guests. These excursions are intended to highlight the city’s cultural heritage, gastronomy, and business environment, fostering a positive image that delegates carry back to their respective markets.
Infrastructure Development and Future Outlook
The timing of the 2028 summit aligns with a period of significant infrastructure investment in Lithuania. The announcement follows the successful opening of a new departures terminal at Vilnius Airport and comes amid record-breaking passenger traffic projections for the coming years.

Steven Small, Vice President of Routes, noted that Vilnius was chosen due to its vibrant economy and modern infrastructure. The city’s ability to handle increasing passenger volumes and its commitment to upgrading aviation facilities were key factors in the successful bid. For the local aviation sector, the summit is viewed as a validation of recent growth and a springboard for future expansion.
As preparations begin, the collaboration between the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Economy and Innovation, the Vilnius City Municipality, and Lithuanian Airports (LTOU) will focus on maximizing the event’s impact. The goal is to ensure that the relationships forged during Routes Europe 2028 translate into a more robust and diverse flight schedule for the region well into the next decade.
