Daugavpils Honors WWII Victims: A Call for Unity and Remembrance
On Friday, May 8th, the leadership of the Daugavpils state city municipality visited World War II burial sites and memorials to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the conflict. The delegation laid flowers at several locations, marking the official Day of the Defeat of Nazism and the commemoration of all war victims with a solemn ceremony.
A Message of Unity and Human Cost
Andrejs Elksniņš, Chairman of the Daugavpils City Council, delivered a poignant address during the commemorations. He emphasized that the day serves as a reminder of the tens of millions of lives lost and the devastating price humanity paid for ideologies of hatred and superiority.
“History should not become a tool for dividing people,” Elksniņš stated. “The memory of the war is not intended for political disputes, but so that nothing like this ever happens again.”
He noted that the global conflict claimed approximately 80 million lives over six years, a consequence of the desire for one group to dominate others based on origin, culture, or language. The Mayor’s message focused on the human cost of the war rather than the political divisions that often surround historical dates.

Since 1995, May 8th has been recognized as an official day of remembrance in Latvia. It specifically honors the defeat of Nazism and pays tribute to the victims of the Second World War. Each year, representatives from the Daugavpils municipality and local residents visit various memorial sites across the city to show their respect for the fallen.
