Northamptonshire youth representatives take office to shape local services
Twenty young residents aged 11 to 18 have been elected to the West Northamptonshire Youth Council for the 2026–2027 term. Working alongside three newly appointed Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs), these representatives will serve as a direct link between the local youth population and decision-makers within the West Northamptonshire Council.
This initiative, delivered in partnership with Clubs for Young People Northamptonshire, ensures that the perspectives of younger residents are integrated into the development of local services. The new term officially commenced on 1 April 2026, with members already participating in induction activities to set their strategic priorities for the coming year.
Representation for mental health and local services
The Youth Council is tasked with influencing decisions on several key topics, specifically mental health and wellbeing, safety, education, and access to career opportunities. Throughout the 2026–2027 term, the councillors will engage in a variety of structured programs, including Youth Takeover Day, the Young Inspectors initiative, and the Youth Bank project.

Beyond advisory roles, the members will work directly with council departments to improve practical services. This includes shaping the delivery of half-term activities and reviewing transport options for young people across the region. Regular “Cake and Debate” sessions are also scheduled to facilitate open dialogue between the council and its younger constituents.
Regional and national advocacy roles
In addition to the local Youth Council, three representatives—Imogen, Chanel, and Laila—have been elected as Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs). These individuals will represent the interests of West Northamptonshire on both a regional and national level.

Their roles involve campaigning on significant issues and participating in high-level debates. As part of their tenure, the MYPs will have the opportunity to speak in the House of Commons during UK Youth Parliament sessions. Young people interested in participating in youth engagement activities or contacting their representatives can reach the council’s dedicated youth team via email.
